Brecknock and the Art of Regional Identity
David Moore
The fully illustrated lecture is about the way artists have responded to and interpreted the landscape, character and culture of Brecknockshire over the last three centuries. It is particularly concerned with how the region's identity, as perceived by outsiders, has been shaped by visual images. In the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries the region’s attractions were made known through prints, guide books, antiquarian works and watercolours. Later nineteenth century artists who depicted the region are largely forgotten today. In the twentieth century neo-romantic artists visited the region. Josef Herman settled in the industrial south and influenced many artists. Today the Brecon Beacons have become an iconic symbol of the region and are incorporated into much of the advertising.
David Moore has worked for twenty years in Welsh public museums and galleries. He became curator of Brecknock Museum and Art Gallery in 1992, where he established the art gallery, promoted a lively programme of exhibitions and created, with substantial support from Brecknock Museum Art Trust, a notable regional art collection.
